I think what Arnold is trying to articulate in his claim is that society has double standards. Nobody is happy whether you're doing good, or if you're doing bad. I agree with the fact that a lot of it might have to do with the secularization of schools. I agree with this because if education wasn't so secular, religion would be much more tolerated by others. Since school is what the youth is taught in and spends most of their time throughout their lifetime if they have those resources, a lot of their views are constructed by what's taught in schools. They learn about white history, so they develop unconscious racial preferences. They're taught traditional gender roles through dress codes and discipline. They learn about the patriarchy, the women stays home with the children, and that abortions are bad. They're taught that what you wear determines whether or not you have respect for yourself and if you're asking for it. They learn that the only way to be valued in society is to go to college and get good grades, only to learn that people will still look down upon them.
