How much time do you have to write the rhetorical analysis essay on the AP English exam?

  • 40 minutes

What are the qualities of a successful intro for a rhetorical analysis timed write?

  • The intro must show organization, have a strong thesis, and address key points.

What are the qualities of a successful body paragraph for a rhetorical analysis timed write?

  • The body paragraphs must show coherence to the prompt as well as the thesis. Implications should be drawn out from key points (1:2 ratio) and address counter claims. 

What are the qualities of a successful conclusion for a rhetorical analysis timed write?

  • The conclusion should not just restate the thesis, but explain the strengths and weaknesses of the text, and reinforce the position of the author. 

What should you NOT do in a rhetorical analysis?

  • You should not use personal pronouns such as "I" or "we" 
  • Do not be explicit in using terms such as "pathos, ethos, logos"
